Star Power: Milky Way Star Quilt Block & Milky Way Star Variation Quilt Block

Milky Way Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.(These are paired with the Blue 3 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.(These are paired with the Red 3 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Milky Way Star Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the White 4 1/4″ square & then they’re paired with the results of the Red 3 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares & the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the Blue 4 1/4″ square & then they’re paired with the results of the Red 3 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Red 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2 1/2″ squares which will create TWO (2) Four-Patch blocks. They’ll also be the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Lt Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ block. (This is paired with the White 4 7/8″ block, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Lt. Green 2 1/2″ squares which will create TWO (2) Four-Patch blocks. They’ll also be the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Dk. Green 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Green
    2 1/2″squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Dk. Green
  • 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Dk. Green 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2 rectangles. They’ll also be the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block.
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ block. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Lt. Green 4 7/8″ block, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 6 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’ll flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Yellow 3 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square.Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
