Square on Square Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
- Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 6 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’ll flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Yellow 3 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square.Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Square on Square Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
