Countdown to Christmas 12/18/2019: Arching Tree Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Dark Green 2 1/2″ squares.)
  • Green: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THIRTEEN (13) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Dark Green 2 7/8″ squares. It will also be the “trunk: of your Arching Tree. It will also create the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Dark Green: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2 1/2″ squares.)
  • Dark Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Dark Green 3 3/8″ square. It will also be the “trunk: of your Arching Tree. It will also create the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (ONE (1) of these will be the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) of these will be the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block. The remaining TWO (2) of these are paired with TWO (2) of the Green 2 1/2″ squares.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the Dark Green 3 3/8″ square. Which will create the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THIRTEEN (13) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ x 4″ rectangle. (This will be flanked by the result of the Brown
    1 7/8″ square. These two together will create the “Trunk” of your Pine Tree.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangle. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will flank the Brown 1 7/8″ x 4″ rectangle. These two together will create the “Trunk” of your Pine Tree. It will also be the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Olive Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the Green 2 1/2″ square & on the other side by the results of the Bright Green 2 7/8″ squares. All of these together will create the “bottom” of the Pine Tree.)
  • Bright Green: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This will be paired with the TWO (2) Olive Green
    2 1/2″ squares.)
  • Bright Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. You only need THREE (3) of these triangles for this quilt block. (ONE (1) of these will flank on TWO (2) sides the Olive Green 2 1/2″ square. The other TWO (2) will flank the same Olive Green 2 1/2″ squares just ONE (1) time.)
  • Dark Green: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the Dark Green
    2 7/8″ squares. ONE (1) of these will be the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Dark Green 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These will flank TWO (2) sides of the Brown 1 7/8″ x 4″ rectangle.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ rectangle. (This will flank on ONE (1) end the White 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. It will also be the upper left-hand side of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. (This will be flanked on ONE (1) end by the White 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ rectangle. It will also be the bottom of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Light Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ x 6 1/8″ rectangles. (These will flank the White 1 7/8″ x
    3 3/8″ rectangles & the Blue 1 7/8″ squares.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is flanked by the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles & the Blue 1 7/8″ squares. This will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. Together, they will create a “frame” around the Blue 3 3/8″ square & be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These will be flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares. Which will help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Blue 1 7/8″ x
    3 3/8″ rectangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 1 7/8″ squares. Together, they will create a “frame” around the Blue 3 3/8″ square & be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the Blue 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. Which will help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the Light Blue 3 3/8″ x 6 1/8″ rectangles.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the White
    3 7/8″ squares. These will help create the “Cross” & be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ x 10 3/8″ rectangle. (This will flank the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares. This will help create the “Cross” & be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares. They will also create the “Crown” of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank one ONE (1) end, both the Purple 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles & the Purple 1 7/8″ x 10 3/8″ rectangle. These will help create the “Cross” & be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the results of the Gold 4 1/2″ squares. Which will create a “frame” around the “Crown” of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides both the Purple 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles & the Purple 1 7/8″ x 10 3/8″ rectangle. These will also help create the “Cross” & be the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

(Ed. Note: This is a scrappy quilt block, so just choose whatever scraps you want to use & cut your bits and pieces out of them. Just so you end up with the quilt block shown above.)

  • Peach, Lilac, Green, Mint Green, Yellow, Pink, Light Turquoise, Purple & Light Peach: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square of EACH color. (Each one of these squares is paired with the White 2″ squares & will make a total of NINE (9) Snowball Corners as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THIRTY-SIX (36) 2″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
