On Cloud Nine: Patriotic Quilt Block

Patriotic Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Patriotic Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ x
    4 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square in the center of this quilt block. When sewn together they’ll create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares. When sewn together they’ll create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Red 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 4 78″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

The Port Perry Patchers Quilt Guild are from Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. It’s a small town just east of Toronto. Their quilt guild was first formed in 1989. Currently they have approximately 50 active members. Ordinarily they meet on the third Monday of the month.

Vermont Hills Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Aqua: Cut EIGHT (8) 3 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 8″ square. (This is paired with the White 8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. Only ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles are needed for this quilt block. The Half-Square Triangle is also the center of this quilt block & it’s surrounded by the rest of the smaller Half-Square Triangles.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Aqua 3 1/4″ squares which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 8″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares. Then they’ll be paired with the White 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the White 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the White 4″ square in the center of this quit block. Which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) side with the Green/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other side with the results of the Green 3 1/4″ squares. In addition they’re paired on ONE (1) other side with the results of the Green 3 3/8″ squares.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the Green 2 3/8″ squares. Then they’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Green 3 3/8″ squares.)
