On Cloud Nine: The Chief Quilt Block

The Chief Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

The Chief Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Sage Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with each other. Then they’re paired with the results of the Sage Green 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sage Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create one-half of a Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Jade: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with each other. Then they’re paired with the results of the Jade 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Jade: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create one-half of a Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Turquoise: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Sage Green 2 7/8″ squares. Then they’ll be flanked on ONE (1) other side by the results of the Jade 2 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Turquoise 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gold: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Green
    4 1/4″ square. Then they’ll flank the White 4 3/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Gold
    4 1/4″ square. Then they’ll flank the White 4 3/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Gold 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

(These are paired with the Lilac 1 1/4″ x 1 7/8″ rectangles & they’re also paired with the Lilac 1 1/4″ x 2 5/8″ rectangles.   • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Lilac 1/4″ x 1 7/8″ rectangles & they’re also paired with the Lilac 1 1/4″ x 2 5/8″ rectangles. Then they’ll flank the results of the Purple 3 1/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/4″ x 2 5/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the results of the Lilac 3 1/4″ squares. & they’ll flank the results of the Purple 3 1/4″ square. All are needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/4″ x 2 5/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the results of the Lilac 3 1/4″ squares. & they’ll flank the results of the Purple 3 1/4″ square. All are needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Red 2 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the Lilac 2 1/2″ squares in the corners as needed for this quilt block.)
