Grandmother’s Cross Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Fuchsia: Cut TEN (10) 2 1/2″squares.
  • White: Cut TWO (3) 3 1/2″ squares.
  • White: Cut FORTY TWO (42) 2 3/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
  • White: Cut TWENTY (20) x 12 1/2″ strips.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 9″ square.
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Red 3 3/4″ squares to create half-square triangles.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 1 3/4″ x 4″ strip.
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 1 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Ash Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares.
  • Lime Green: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square.
  • Lime Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (You only need THREE (3) of these triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 3/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares.
  • White: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 3/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Green 2 3/4″ squares to create half-square triangles.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (You only need TWO (2) of these triangles to make this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ strip.
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ strip.

(Editor’s note: This is a scrappy quilt block, so just choose whatever scraps you want to use, and cut your bits and pieces out of them, so you end up with the quilt block shown above.)

  • Peach, Lilac, Green, Mint Green, Yellow, Pink, Light Turquoise, Purple & Light Peach: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square of EACH color.
  • White: Cut THIRTY-SIX (36) 2″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
