Eight Pointed Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Light Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Light Yellow 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by results of the Light Yellow 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Light Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will be the four corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Light Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Light Blue 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by results of the Light Blue 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Eight Pointed Star Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Mint Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Blue 3″ squares, which will create an additional FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Mint Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 5 3/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 5 3/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THREE (3) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 7″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are the upper left-hand & upper right-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 13 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This is flanked by the results of the White 7″ square. They’re also the lower left-hand & lower right-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 3/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 5 3/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THREE (3) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank on ONE (1) side the results of the Green 5 3/4″ squares, they’ll flank on ONE (1) other side the results of the Green 7″ square & they’ll flank on the ONE (1) last side the results of the Green 13 1/4″ square. As needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the Light Brown 5″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Brown: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the results of the Beige 3″ squares & the Brown 2 1/2″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the Beige 3″ squares & the results of the Light Brown 5″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Beige 5 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They will also help in creating the center of this quilt block.)
  • Beige: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Brown 3″ squares. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Beige: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Brown
    2 1/2″ square & the results of the Light Brown 5″ square. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Beige: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Brown 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They will also help in creating the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Navy Blue: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. You only need SIX (6) of these triangles for this quilt block. (FOUR (4) of these are paired with the results of the White
    5 1/4″ squares & the results of the Green 5 1/4″ squares. Which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles for this quilt block. The other TWO (2) are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares. Which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (TWO (2) of these are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares & the results of the Green 5 1/4″ squares. Which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles for this quilt block. The other TWO (2) are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. You only need EIGHT (8) of these triangles for this quilt block. (FOUR (4) of these are paired with the results of the the Navy Blue 5 1/4″ squares which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these will be paired with the results of the Green 5 1/4″ squares which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. The remaining TWO (2) will be paired with the the results of the Navy Blue 5 1/4″ squares & the results of the Green 5 1/4″ squares. Which will create TWO (2) more Quarter-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)

The remaining TWO (2) are paired with the results of the Purple 5 1/4″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square & it’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. (These are paired with the White 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (SIX (6) of these are paired with the results of the Aqua 5 1/4″ squares & with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s. The remaining TWO (2) of these are paired with the results of the Aqua 5 1/4″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle & it’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

  • Dark Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These will flank the Light Gray 3 1/2″ squares on ONE (1) side, which will help create FOUR (4) Almost a Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Light Gray 6 1/2″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked on THREE (3) sides by the results of the White 3″ squares & on the other side by the Dark Gray 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. All of these together will create FOUR (4) Almost Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • Light Gray: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Peach 3 1/4″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Peach 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Light Gray 3 1/2″ squares, which will help create FOUR (4) Almost a Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Peach 3 1/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.
