On Cloud Nine: Northwind Quilt Block

Northwind Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Northwind Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles.)
  • Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 5/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White
    4 5/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. Once sewn together it’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired on ONE (1) side with the results of the Blue 4 5/8″ squares in the corners of this quilt block. They’re also paired with the Blue/White Half-Square Triangles.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 5/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White
    4 5/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. Once sewn together it’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Blue

Cactus Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. Then they’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. Once they’re all sewn together they’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the Gray 5 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Gray
    2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Gray: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch. Once they’re sewn together they’ll be the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Jade: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White
    6 7/8″ square that’s in the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Jade: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These rectangles are paired in ONE (1) end with the White 3 1/2″ square that’s in the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. They’re also paired with the Jade/White Half-Square Triangle that’s in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Jade: Cut ONE (1) 6 7/8″ square. (This is paired with the White 6 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Half-Square Triangle. Once it’s sewn together it’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square.  (This is the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. It’s paired one TWO (2) sides with the Jade 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These are the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6 7/8″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Jade 3 7/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. Only ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles is needed for this quilt block. Once the Half-Square Triangle is sewn together it’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.Will yield TWO (2) triangles. Only ONE (1) of these triangles is needed for this quilt block. (This triangle is the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block. It’s paired with the results of the Jade 3 7/8″ square.)
