Cactus Star Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. Then they’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. Once they’re all sewn together they’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the Gray 5 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
- Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Gray
2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.) - Gray: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch. Once they’re sewn together they’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
- Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These will flank the results of the Green 5 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
- Gray: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Gray
2 7/8″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.) - White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Gray 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch. Once they’re sewn together they’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (These squares are paired with the Green/White Half-Square Triangles which will create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. Then they’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. Once they’re all sewn together they’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

Sew TWELVE (12) “Cactus Star Quilt Blocks” to end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished & 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
