Birthday Cake Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FIVE (5) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TEN (10) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut ONE (1) 5 7/8″ square. (This is paired with a White 5 7/8″ square which will create TWO (1) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block. It’s also the bottom right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut ONE (1) 5 7/8″ square. (This is paired with a Pink 5 7/8″ square which will create TWO (1) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 5 7/8″ square. On the back side draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with a Lilac 5 7/8″ square which will create TWO (1) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 5 7/8″ square. (These are paired with the White 5 7/8″ square, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TEN (10) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 7/8″ square. (This is paired with a Lilac 5 7/8″ square which will create TWO (1) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block. It’s also the bottom right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 7/8″ square. On the back side draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Pink 5 7/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut EIGHT (8) 3 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

    • Red: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be the center needed for this quilt block.)
    • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
    • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Red 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
    • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
    • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Red 4 1/4″ squares & the results of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese needed for this quilt block.)

    • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Red 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
    • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the result’s of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
    • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
    • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
    • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corner’s of the inside star as needed for this quilt block. They’re flanked by the results of the Red 2 3/8″ squares.)
    • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the the results of the Red 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
    • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the the results of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares & by the results of the Red 4 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Navy Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be the upper and lower “frames” for the Red 2 1/2″ squares in the centers of this quilt block.)
  • Navy Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be the left and right “frames” for the Red 2 1/2″ squares in the centers of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the Navy Blue 1 1/2 x 2 1/2″ rectangles, as well as the Navy Blue 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, to create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWELVE (12) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ squares to create the border on TWO (2) sides of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ELEVEN 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Red 1 1/2″ squares to create the border on TWO (2) sides of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These will flank the Blue 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles to create an additional “frame” around the centers of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 1 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be the vertical strips that will “frame” the centers of the quilt block. ONE (1) of these 1 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ rectangles will also be the right-hand outside border of this quilt block.)
