Star Power: Starry Quilt Block & Starry Variation Quilt Block

Starry Quilt Block a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Starry Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Steel Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 9 1/4″ square, which will help create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re flanked by the results of the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 9 1/4″ square, which will help create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Steel Blue 2 7/8″ squares.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares & they’re also flanked by the results of the Steel Blue 2 7/8″ squares. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 9 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (This is flanked by the results of the Steel Blue 2 7/8″ squares & it’s also flanked by the results of the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares. They’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

Starry Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 9 1/4″ square, which will help create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re flanked by the results of the Lilac 2 7/8″ squares.)
  • Lilac: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch square. They also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the Lilac 2 1/2″ squares on TWO (2) sides & they’ll be flanked by the White 2 1/2″ squares on TWO (2) other sides.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Lilac 2 7/8″ squares & they’re flanked on the remaining TWO (2) sides by the results of the Purple 2 7/8″ squares. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Lilac 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch square. They also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 9 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Purple
    2 7/8″ squares & they’re also flanked by the results of the Lilac 2 7/8″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut TWELVE (12) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWENTY-FOUR (24) Half-Square Triangles. ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) will the the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (ONE (1) of these will be the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) will be the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWENTY-FOUR (24) Half-Square Triangles. ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) will the the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ x 21 1/2″ rectangle. (This is paired with the Red 1 7/8″ x 17 1/2″ rectangle on ONE (1) side & it’s paired on ONE (1) other side with the results of the White 12 7/8″ square. The rectangle’s longer than necessary, so you can cut it down to size, once you sew everything together!)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ x 17 1/2″ rectangle. (This is paired with one ONE (1) side the Yellow
    1 7/8″ x 21 1/2″ rectangle & it’s paired on ONE (1) other side with the Green 1 7/8″ x 15″ rectangle. The rectangle’s longer than necessary, so you can cut it down to size, once you sew everything together!)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ x 15″rectangle. (This is paired with on ONE (1) side the Red 1 7/8″ x 17 1/2″ rectangle & on ONE (1) other side it’s paired with the Blue 1 7/8″ x 12″ rectangle. The rectangle’s longer than necessary, so you can cut it down to size, once you sew everything together!)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 1 3/4″ x 12″ rectangle. (This is paired with on ONE (1) side the Green 1 7/8″ x 15″rectangle & on ONE (1) other side it’s paired with the results of the White 4 7/8″ square. The rectangle’s longer than necessary, so you can cut it down to size, once you sew everything together!)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this block. (This is the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Blue 1 3/4″ x 12″ rectangle.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 12 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this block. (This is the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Yellow 1 7/8″ x 21 1/2″ rectangle as needed for this quilt block.)
