Star Power: Star in a Star Quilt Block & Star in a Star Variation Quilt Block

Star in a Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Star in a Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dk. Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 3 1/2″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, once they’re all sewn together.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares. (These are sewn together with the Purple/White Half-Square Triangles & the White 2″ squares. When all are sewn together they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. When sewn together with the Purple 2″ squares & the White 2″ squares they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re then sewn together with the White 2″ squares & with the Purple 3 1/2″ square. When sewn all together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are sewn together with the White/Purple Half-Square Triangles & the Purple 2″ squares to create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares. (These are sewn to each other & then to the White/Purple Half-Square Triangles. Plus they’re sewn to the Purple 3 1/2″ square which will create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. When sewn together with the Purple 2″ squares & the White 2″ squares they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re then sewn together with the White 2″ squares & with the Purple 3 1/2″ square. When all are sewn together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Dk. Purple 2 3/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. When sewn together with the Purple 2″ squares & the White 2″ squares they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are sewn together with the White 2″ squares & the Dk. Blue/White Half-Square Triangles. When all sewn together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’re then sewn together with the White 2″ squares & with the Dk. Blue/White Half-Square Triangles. When sewn all together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are sewn together with the Dk. Blue/White Half-Square Triangles & the Lt. Blue 2″ squares which will create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Green 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners. It’s also paired with the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares. Sew them all together & they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 3 3/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. When sewn together with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares, plus the White 2 1/2″ squares, they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (When sewn together with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares, plus the Green/White Half-Square Triangles, they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (When sewn together with the results of the White
    4 7/8″ squares, plus the Green/White Half-Square Triangles, they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are sewn to the left, right, top & bottom of the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. Sew them together with the Green/White Half-Square Triangles & the White 2 1/2″ squares.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the Brown 3 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’ll become the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the center Quarter-Square Triangle & will create ONE (1) Square in a Square as needed to sew the center of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ squares & will create FOUR (4) Four-Patch corners as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the Pink 3 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’ll become the center of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Brown 2″ squares & will create FOUR (4) Four-Patch corners as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

The finished size of the quilt is: 73” W x 89” H Finished
The quilt is made with 20 “Gnome” quilt blocks that are 14 1/2” Unfinished & 14” Finished




This quilt sews together quickly! It’s a traditionally pieced quilt that can be as large or small as you want it to be! Make it a table runner, a table topper or a full sized quilt. No matter how large or small you make it, it’ll be met with oohs & aahs when others see it!

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dk. Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Dk. Green 7 1/4″ squares & they’re also paired with the results of the Green 3 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Dk.   • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
