Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lilac: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will flank the results of the Lilac 3″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lilac 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Purple 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Purple 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is flanked by the results of the Bright Pink 3″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Pink 3″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Pink 3 1/2″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corner portion’s of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Yellow 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Morning Star Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Morning Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dark Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the White 3″ squares & then with the results of the Lilac 5″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the White 3″ squares & then with the Dark Purple 2 1/2″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Light Purple: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Lilac 5 1/4″ square & the Dark Purple 2 1/2″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the Lilac 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Light Purple 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
