Cheery Star Quilt Block a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Cheery Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut TWELVE (12) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Nine-Patch parts of this quilt block. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the White
    2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Pink 4 1/4″ squares & they’re also flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWENTY-FOUR (24) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Nine-Patch sections of this quilt block. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Pink 4 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They’ll also flank the White 3 1/4″ square & help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Pink
    4 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • White: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Nine-Patch sections of this quilt block. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Green 4 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They’ll also flank the White
    3 1/4″ square & help create the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired on the left & right side with the White 2 1/2″ square. They “frame” the center square.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles & the White 2 1/2″ square. They “frame” the center square.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is paired with the Blue 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles & it’s also paired with the Blue 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back sides, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. If you make TWELVE (12) “Double Star Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Double Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE  (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Salmon: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Salmon: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE  (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Yellow 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Salmon 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Yellow
    2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Salmon
    3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
