The Forth Day After Christmas 12/29/2021: Grampie’s Favorite Quilt Block

Grampie's Favorite Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Grampie’s Favorite Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 5/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the smaller Half-Square Triangles. Then they’ll be flanked by the White 3 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Teal 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 5/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Teal 2 5/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the Teal 4 1/4″ & they’re also flanked by the smaller Half-Square Triangles. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Pink 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. Together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. Together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the center of this quilt block which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Lt. Gray
    4 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Gray: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FIVE (5) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the either the White 2 7/8″ squares or the Red 2 7/8″ squares. ONE (1) of these Blue 2 7/8″ squares is the center of this quilt block. Together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch section.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares & they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch section. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. (FOUR (4) of these are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. ONE (1) other one is are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ square in the center of this quilt block, which will create ONE (1) Nine-Patch section. The remaining FOUR (4) of them are paired with the Half-Square Triangles as needed for the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 3 1/4″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Half-Square Triangles & will help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (TWO (2) of these triangles are flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block. The other TWO (2) of these triangles are paired with the results of the Emerald Green 4 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Emerald Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Half-Square Triangles & will help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Emerald Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (TWO (2) of these triangles are flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block. The other TWO (2) of these triangles are paired with the results of the Teal 4 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of either the Teal 4 1/4″ square, or they’ll flank the results of the Emerald Green 4 1/4″ square, which will produce a total of FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the upper left-hand & upper the right-hand sides of the Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 5″ rectangles. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the horizontal left-hand & the horizontal right-hand sides of the Flying Geese.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This is the “Trunk” of the “Pear Tree” quilt block, it’s flanked by the results of the Brown 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is the base of the “Trunk” of the “Pear Tree” quilt block. It flanks the Brown 3 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut THREE (3) 3 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 5/8″ squares, which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (ONE (1) of these is the top of the “Pear Tree” & the other THREE (3) will flank the Half-Square Triangles.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need THREE (3) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These will flank FOUR (4) of the Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 3 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Dk. Green 3 5/8″ squares, which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the Brown 3 1/2″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 6 7/8″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
