Empire Cross Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Lt. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Half-Square Triangles & will help create the center of this quilt block.)
- Teal: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (TWO (2) of these triangles are flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block. The other TWO (2) of these triangles are paired with the results of the Emerald Green 4 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle, in the center of this quilt block.)
- Emerald Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Half-Square Triangles & will help create the center of this quilt block.)
- Emerald Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (TWO (2) of these triangles are flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block. The other TWO (2) of these triangles are paired with the results of the Teal 4 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle, in the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of either the Teal 4 1/4″ square, or they’ll flank the results of the Emerald Green 4 1/4″ square, which will produce a total of FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the upper left-hand & upper the right-hand sides of the Flying Geese.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 5″ rectangles. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the horizontal left-hand & the horizontal right-hand sides of the Flying Geese.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Empire Cross Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
