Star Power: Temperance Star Quilt Block & Temperance Star Variation Quilt Block

Temperance Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Temperance Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lilac: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Purple 1 7/8″ squares, then they’ll create a Four-Patch that’s the center of this quilt block, when they’re sewn together.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Lilac 1 7/8″ squares, then they’ll create a Four-Patch that’s the center of this quilt block, when they’re sewn together)
  • Blue: Cut FOURTEEN (14) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create TWENTY-EIGHT (28) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the Lilac/Purple Four-Patch that’s in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 3 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOURTEEN (14) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 3/8″ squares which will create TWENTY-EIGHT (28) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank the results of the Blue
    3 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These rectangles are on the left & right sides of the star that’s in the center of this quilt block. They’ll create partially create a “frame” around the center star.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangles. (These rectangles are on the top & bottom of the star that’s in the center of this quilt block. They’ll create partially create a “frame” around the center star.)

Temperance Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt. Pink: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Purple 1 7/8″ squares, then they’ll create a Four-Patch that’s the center of this quilt block, when they’re sewn together.)
  • Rose: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Lilac 1 7/8″ squares, then they’ll create a Four-Patch that’s the center of this quilt block, when they’re sewn together)
  • Pink: Cut TEN (10) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles, as need to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the Pink/White Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the Lt. Pink/Rose Four-Patch that’s in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the Pink 3 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Pink 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles, as need to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White

  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank the results of the Pink
    3 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These rectangles are on the left & right sides of the star that’s in the center of this quilt block. They’ll create partially create a “frame” around the center star.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangles. (These rectangles are on the top & bottom of the star that’s in the center of this quilt block. They’ll create partially create a “frame” around the center star.)

Lightening Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Gray 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Green 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Dk. Blue: Cut TEN (10) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles, are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will flank the Gray 3 3/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles, are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired on ONE (1) side with the Green/Gray Flying Geese, they’re also paired on ONE (1) other side with the Dk. Blue/White Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

  • Red: Cut TWELVE (12) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create TWENTY-FOUR (24) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block when the quilt block is sewn together.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 5 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 5 2/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed when this quilt block is sewn together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Red/White small Half-Square Triangles.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 3/8″ squares which will create TWENTY-FOUR (24) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block when the quilt block is sewn together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the small Green/White Half-Square Triangles & will help create the Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TEN (10) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles. After they’re sewn together they’ll be paired with the Blue 3 3/8″ squares, which will help create the Nine-Patch, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green/White Half-Square Triangles in the corner of this quilt block. They’re also paired with the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 3/8″ squares which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles.
