On Cloud Nine Bonus! Rolling Pinwheel Quilt Block!

Rolling Pinwheel Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Rolling Pinwheel Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the White
    2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Orange: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Yellow/White Flying Geese as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares & will help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Orange/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Orange 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Yellow/White Flying Geese as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Orange 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares & will help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the Yellow 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (2) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides, with the Orange/White Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares. They’re also paired with the White 3 1/2″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the results of the Pink 4 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the Pink
    4 3/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the Pink 3 3/8″ squares. They’re also paired with the results of the Pink 4 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the results of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank the results of the Blue 3 1/2″ square in the center of this quilt block. They’ll create ONE (1) Square in a Square as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
    4 3/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gold: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the White 1 1/2″ squares. It’s also paired with the Green 1 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Gold: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the Gold/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other end with the Green squares that are in the Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block. Additionally they’re paired  on ONE (1) other side with the Green 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ squares. They’re also paired with the Gold 1 1/2″ square. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the White 1 1/2″ square. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other end with the White 1 1/2″ squares that are in the Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block. Additionally they’re paired  on ONE (1) other side with the Gold 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the White
    1 1/2″ square. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other end with the White 1 1/2″ squares that are in the in the Nine-Patch center of this quilt block. Additionally they’re paired  on TWO (2) other sides with the Gold 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block. They “frame” the Green/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles. (These are the left-hand & the right-hand “frame” around the Green/White Half-Square Triangles. As needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Gold 1 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 1 1/2″ squares. They’re also paired with the Gold 1 1/2″ square. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Brown 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners. They’ll also be the lower left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. (This is paired with the Blue 2 1/2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Purple: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is paired with TWO (2) of the Purple/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut SEVEN (7) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (ONE (1) of these is the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block. The other ONE (1) is paired with the Purple/White Half-Square Triangles. All are needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle. (This is the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangles. (These are the left-hand & the right-hand sides of this quilt block. They’re located above the “ship” portion.
