Quilted Kitchen: Granny’s Quilt Block & Granny’s Spice Cookies

Granny’s Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Granny’s Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/4″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White 3 3/4″ square. They’ll create a “frame” around the Four-Patch in the center of this quilt block. As needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Red/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 4 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the Red 2 1/4″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the Red 3 3/4″ square. They’ll create a “frame” around the Four-Patch in the center of this quilt block. As needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Red/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Friendship Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 4 3/4″ square in the center of this quilt block. It’ll create ONE (1) Square in a Square as needed to sew it together.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles.   • Dk. Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Aqua 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Dk. Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Teal 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Dk. Purple: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Aqua 2 7/8″ squares. They’re also flanked by the results of the Teal 2 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Dk. Purple: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • Aqua: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Dk. Purple 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Aqua: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Dk. Purple 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the Dk. Purple
    5 1/4″ square, which will end up creating FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the Dk. Purple 5 1/4″ square, which will end up creating FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Dk. Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Bright Pink: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square.
