Building Blocks Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Building Blocks Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut TWENTY 2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ squares. They’ll create FOUR (4) Nine-Patches. When sewn together they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Tan 2″ squares. They’ll create FOUR (4) Nine-Patches. When sewn together they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Tan 3 1/2″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) Corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) Corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 4 7/8″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Rust: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.
  • Teal: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the results of the Rust 4 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Snowball corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Teal 4 1/2″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the White 3 3/8″ square in the center of this quilt block. They’ll create ONE (1) Square in a Square as needed to sew it together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Rust: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 1/2″ square in the center of this quilt block. They’ll create ONE (1) Square in a Square as needed to sew it together.)
  • Rust: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the results of the Rust 4 1/4″ squares. They’re also paired with the Orange 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. Then they’ll flank the results of the Orange 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Rust: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the results of the Rust 2 3/8″ squares. They’re also paired with the Orange 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. Then they’ll flank the results of the Orange 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These rectangles are paired with the results of the Rust 4 1/4″ squares. They’re also paired with the results of the Rust 2 3/8″ squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the Orange 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Rust 2 3/8″ squares. They’re also flanked by the results of the Rust 5 1/4″ squares.
