On Cloud Nine: Modern Flame Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be TWO (2) of the corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle. (This will be flanked on one end by the Green
    2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ rectangle & on the other end by the results of the Green 2 7/8″ square. It’ll also be the bottom of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ rectangle. (This will be flanked on one end by the Green
    2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle & on the other end by the results of the Green 2 7/8″ square. It’ll also be the left-hand side of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut SIX (6) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with each other. They’ll also be flanked on one end by the results of the White 2 7/8″ square & on the other end by the Red 4 1/2″ square. In addition, they’ll be the top & right-hand sides of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut THREE (3) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the Red 2 1/2″ squares + the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares. It’ll also be the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked on ONE (1) side by the Green 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle & on ONE (1) other side by the Green 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ rectangle. It’ll also be flanked by the results of the Red 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be TWO (2) of the corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Aqua: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 2″ squares. Then they’re paired with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Split Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Aqua 2 7/8″ squares & with the White 2 1/2″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be flanked on the left & right sides by the results of the Aqua 2 7/8″ squares. They’ll also be paired with the results of the Aqua
    5 1/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Aqua 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the Aqua 2 7/8″ squares. Then they’re paired with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Split Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Aqua 2 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)

  • Red: Cut FOURTEEN (14) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY-EIGHT (28) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOURTEEN (14) 2 1/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY-EIGHT (28) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles. (These are sewn into the upper part of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These are sewn into the lower part of this quilt block.)

  • Blue: Cut FOURTEEN (14) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, to create TWENTY-EIGHT (28) Half-Square Triangles needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These will flank the FOUR (4) corners of the Quarter-square Triangles.)
  • White: Cut FOURTEEN (14) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY-EIGHT (28) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Square in a Squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the results of the White 3 1/2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will be flanked by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will be flanked by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ square to create ONE (1) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
