Weathervane Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Square in a Squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the results of the White 3 1/2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will be flanked by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut EIGHT 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will be flanked by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ square to create ONE (1) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Weathervane Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
