Quilted Kitchen: Flock of Birds Quilt Block & Flock Block Knock Off Recipe

Flock of Birds Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut THREE (3) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (TEN (10) of these triangles are paired with the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares which will create FIVE (5) Quarter-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these QST’s are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. ONE (1) of these QST’s is the center of this quilt block. The remaining TWO (2) triangles will flank the results of the White 3 1/4″ square in the center QST.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create one-half of SIXTEEN (16) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create one-half of SIXTEEN (16) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (TEN (10) of these triangles are paired with the results of the Red 3 1/4″ squares which will create FIVE (5) Quarter-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these QST’s are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. ONE (1) of these QST’s is the center of this quilt block. Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the White
    7 1/4″ squares. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. Then they’ll flank the Bright Pink 9″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut ONE (1) 9″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Pink 7 1/4″ square. It’s also flanked by the results of the White 7 1/4″ square. All together it’ll create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Pink
    7 1/4″ squares. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. Then they’ll flank the Bright Pink 9″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Blue 3 1/4″ square.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Aqua 4 1/4″ square & they’re also flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square. All are needed to create this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Salmon
    3 1/4″ square & they’re also paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to create this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the Blue 2 5/8″ squares as needed to create this quilt block.)
  • Salmon: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the Blue 2 5/8″ square on ONE (1) side. They’ll also be paired with the results of the Lt. Blue 4 1/4″ squares. Then they’ll be paired with the White 3 1/2″ squares. All are needed to create this quilt block.)
  • Salmon: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 3 1/4″ square. They’re also paired with the results of the White 3 1/4″ square. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to create this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Lt. Blue 4 1/4″ squares. Then they’re paired with the Quarter-Square Triangles in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re flanked by the results of the Salmon 4 1/4″ squares.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 3 1/4″ square & they’re also paired with the results of the Salmon 3 1/4″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles & will help create the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Sage Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with each other. Then they’re paired with the results of the Sage Green 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sage Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create one-half of a Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Jade: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with each other. Then they’re paired with the results of the Jade 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Jade: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create one-half of a Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Turquoise: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Sage Green 2 7/8″ squares. Then they’ll be flanked on ONE (1) other side by the results of the Jade 2 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Turquoise 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners.)
