On Cloud Nine: Tin Man Quilt Block

Tin Man Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gold: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will flank the Gray 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be the “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)
  • Gold: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ x 7 1/4″ strips. (These will flank the Gray 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be the “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)
  • Gray: Cut THREE (3) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. (These will flank the Gold 4 1/2″ squares & the Gold 4 1/2″ x 7 1/4″ strips. Consider these to be the “Tin Man’s Arm’s.”)
  • Gray: Cut TWO (2) 2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips as needed for this quilt block. Consider these to be the “Tin Man’s Legs.”)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strip. (This will be flanked on one side by the Gray 1 1/2″ x
    4 1/2″ strips & White 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strip. And on the other side by the White 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips & the Gray 2 1/2″ square. Consider this to be the “Tin Man’s Abdomen.”)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (2) 2 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will be flanked on both sides by the White 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be the “Tin Man’s Head.”)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares. Consider this to be the “Tin Man’s Hat.”)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strip. (This will be flanked on both sides by the Gray 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be center between the “Tin Man’s Legs.”)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips. (These will flank the Gray 2 1/2″ square. Consider this to be the space between the “Tin Man’s Head” & the Gold “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (This will flank the results of the Gray 4 1/2″ square. Consider this to be the space between the “Tin Man’s Head” & the “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ strips. (These will be paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ strips as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FIVE (5) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the White 2 1/2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the Blue 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ strips. (These will be paired with the Red 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ strips as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 6 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Turquoise: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Turquoise:  Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THREE (3) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Turquoise: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White:  Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Turquoise 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THREE (3) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Turquoise 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank ONE (1) side of FOUR (4) Green 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. (These will be the center of the plants (so to speak), and will be flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Mint Green: Cut SIX (6) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the Mint Green 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips these directions & bottom & sides of this quilt block. If you don’t understand these instructions, please contact me for additional info.)
  • Teal: Cut TWELVE (12) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Teal 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Mint Green
    2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips as needed for this quilt block.)
