Tin Man Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Gold: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will flank the Gray 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be the “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)
- Gold: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ x 7 1/4″ strips. (These will flank the Gray 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be the “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)
- Gray: Cut THREE (3) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. (These will flank the Gold 4 1/2″ squares & the Gold 4 1/2″ x 7 1/4″ strips. Consider these to be the “Tin Man’s Arm’s.”)
- Gray: Cut TWO (2) 2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips as needed for this quilt block. Consider these to be the “Tin Man’s Legs.”)
- Gray: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strip. (This will be flanked on one side by the Gray 1 1/2″ x
4 1/2″ strips & White 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strip. And on the other side by the White 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips & the Gray 2 1/2″ square. Consider this to be the “Tin Man’s Abdomen.”) - Gray: Cut ONE (2) 2 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will be flanked on both sides by the White 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be the “Tin Man’s Head.”)
- Gray: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares. Consider this to be the “Tin Man’s Hat.”)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strip. (This will be flanked on both sides by the Gray 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. Consider this to be center between the “Tin Man’s Legs.”)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips. (These will flank the Gray 2 1/2″ square. Consider this to be the space between the “Tin Man’s Head” & the Gold “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (This will flank the results of the Gray 4 1/2″ square. Consider this to be the space between the “Tin Man’s Head” & the “Straw that he’s Stuffed with.”)
