On Cloud Nine: Nine-Patch Pinwheel Quilt Block

Nine-Patch Pinwheel Quilt Block Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Nine-Patch Pinwheel Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ squares, which will create the center row of the Nine-Patch portion, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Salmon: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 1 1/2″ squares. (These with the White 1 1/2″ squares. Which will create the top & bottom rows of the Nine-Patch portion of this quilt block.)
  • Light Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Nine-Patch portions of this quilt block.)
  • Light Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Purple 1 1/2″ squares, which will create the center row of Nine-Patch portion, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Salmon 1 1/2″ squares. Which will create the top & bottom rows of the Nine-Patch portion of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Light Pink 3 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Teal: Cut FIVE (5) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TEN (10) Half-Square Triangles. EIGHT (8) of the HST’s will help create the FOUR (4)  corner’s of this quilt block. ONE (1) of these HST’s will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked on two sides by the results of the Teal 2 7/8″ squares. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Teal 2 7/8″ squares which will create TEN (10) Half-Square Triangles. EIGHT (8) of the HST’s will help create the FOUR (4)  corner’s of this quilt block. ONE (1) of these HST’s will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These will be flanked on all FOUR (4) sides, by the Teal 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares & with the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the White
    2 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank on both sides, the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked on both sides the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles & the White 1 7/8″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles & the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ square. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ square. On the back side draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with FOUR (4) of the 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles to create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Teal 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides, the White 2 1/2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO 2″ x 6 1/4″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the Peach 5 1/4″ square, which will create half of a “frame” around that Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2″ x 9″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the Peach 5 1/4″ square, which will create the other half of a “frame” around that Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the Purple 2 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on all FOUR (4) sides, by the results of the Teal 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

  • Bright Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on all FOUR (4) sides, by the results of the Purple 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank all FOUR (4) sides of the Bright Pink 3 3/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Bright Pink 2 1/2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Purple 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Purple 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 9 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
