On Cloud Nine: Fairy Tale Quilt Block

Fairy Tale Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Fairy Tale Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re flanked by the results of the White 3 3/8″ squares.)
  • Aqua: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides with the Lt. Aqua 1 2/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. They’re also flanked by the results of the White
    3 3/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ square. (This in the center of the quilt block. It’s paired with the Yellow 1 7/8″ squares & the Orange 1 7/8″ squares. All of them together will create a Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.(These
  • Lt. Aqua: Cut SIX (6)  1 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the ends of the Lt. Aqua 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Aqua: Cut EIGHT 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Lt. Aqua 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Orange 1 7/8″ squares & the Aqua 1 7/8″ square. All of them together will create a Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the ends of the Yellow 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Yellow 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Yellow 1 7/8″ squares & the Aqua 1 7/8″ square. All of them together will create a Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the ends of the Orange 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Orange 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Aqua 3″ squares. They’ll also be flanked by the Lt. Aqua 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Aqua: Cut EIGHTEEN (18) 1 7/8 squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ squares, which will create THIRTY-SIX (36) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut TWELVE (12) 1 7/8 squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 4 1/2″ squares. (ONE (1) of these is the center of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) is the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. The third ONE (1) is the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHTEEN (18) 1 7/8 squares. On the back sides, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Aqua 1 7/8″ squares, which will create THIRTY-SIX (36) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Aqua 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)

  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll  also be paired with the Pink 2 1/2″ x
    4 1/2″ rectangles which will help create a “frame” around the White 4 1/2″ center square.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ x
    4 1/2″ rectangles. They’ll also help create a “frame” around the White 4 1/2″ center square.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back sides, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Pink 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back sides, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Pink 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

  • Yellow: Cut TEN (10) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block & FOUR (4) more will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.   • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back sides, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
