Want More Free Quilt Block Patterns?

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 1, 2018 by TK HarrisonNovember 1, 2018

Kim Noblin, owner of Block Central, has built quite a following. She started with her free quilt blocks and then started adding her block of the month (BOM) and mystery quilts. I know I made two of one of her BOM quilts (one for me and one for a dear friend of ours) and two of her mystery quilt patterns (one for me and one for a friend of mine) . I loved them so much, I just made more! 🙂 https://blockcentral.comVery rarely do I keep the quilts I make, but I kept two of them from Kim’s patterns. The first one I kept was her 2005 BOM “Everything’s Coming up Roses” quilt. My husband sleeps under it every single night and it gives him some quilty hugs all the night through!

The second quilt I made that was designed by Kim was her “Starfall” mystery quilt. This quilt has a much more sentimental value to me. I purchased a line of Christmas fabric that had roses in it, but you would never know it was Christmas fabric unless you looked really, really closely at it. It’s the roses portion that is the sentimental value.

While living in my third foster home, my foster parents had a natural child who was a year younger than I was. She was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s disease and passed away less than a year later. On the programs, that were handed out at her funeral service, my foster parents had put a statement, “God gave us flowers so that we could have roses in December.” Which explains why my fabric choice has such sentimental quilt.

Where was I? OH yes! Block Central! 🙂 Kim started building her site by adding free quilt blocks to it. Here’s a small sample of what she has on her website:

“Windowsill Wonders” a Free 2018 BOM Quilt Pattern

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 25, 2018 by TK HarrisonOctober 23, 2018

Have you been following along with my “Windowsill Wonders” free 2018 BOM quilt on my sister-site BOMquilts.com?

It’s never too late to start a new quilt, now is it?!! This quilt features the fabric line “Windowsill Garden” designed by Darlene Zimmerman from Robert Kaufman Fabrics. It’s a 1930’s retro colorway that is oh so pastel. I love it, I really, really do! But any pastel fabrics will work! Or retro fabrics! Or make it scrappy, that works, too!

Every once in a while I design a quilt that I want to keep to get a quilty hug from for years to come, and this one fits the bill. I don’t keep very many of the quilts that I make, preferring to give them to others so as to spread the love. I only have four quilts that I’ve made over the years, that I’ve kept and use. Because what good is a quilt if you don’t use it? I don’t want the eye candy, I don’t need it either. Not to mention that I am a pastel person. It’s the best coloring for me to wear and to wrap around me.

If nothing else, download my free pattern and save it for future use. It sews together fairly quickly and is a fun quilt top to make because it’s not your average ‘same blocks used over and over again’ quilt pattern.

Love Lives Here

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 11, 2018 by TK HarrisonOctober 10, 2018

In January 2013, my (third) foster mother decided she’d like to winter with us here in south central Texas. She lives in Iowa and she was so over Iowa winters and had been for many years. She usually went to visit her former sister-in-law in Arizona but she wanted to come stay with us, to get a better feel for our kids and our family dynamics. I had went up to see her in the summer of 2010 with our two younger kids, but she hadn’t met my husband or our two older kids. She was more than welcome to spend six weeks with us, we would enjoy her and vice versa!

A couple of months before she arrived, I had received a quilt back from Kathryn Rister. It was my 2012 block of the month quilt from my sister-site BOMquilts.com called “Bittersweet Churning” in jewel-toned fabric colors. It was a beautiful quilt top but was even more beautiful after Kathryn quilted it than it was when I sent it to her. Oh my! She really lets a quilt talk to her, and she listens all the same! I really don’t think ‘beautiful’ is a nice enough word to give to the finished product after Ms. Kathryn finished with it, it was THAT good!!!

When we knew my foster mother was coming mid-January, my family and I agreed that we’d have a little Christmas with her. When I told her that, she thought it’d be fun, too! And since I’d just received this quilt back from Ms. Kathryn, I felt no one deserved it more than she did!

In July this year, my foster mother suffered a stroke. While in the hospital, she asked her best friend to bring her some of her comforts from home, and one of those things was this quilt that I had gifted to her. Unfortunately, she passed away in early September. However, I wanted to share the love that she and I shared so I asked her daughter, that unless my former foster father had other plans for this quilt, that I’d really like for it to go to my foster mother’s best friend.

You know what? Her best friend now has it, and hopefully it will bring her a whole lot of quilty hugs in the years ahead, while braving those cold Iowa winters. And hopefully it will also remind her of the very special relationship that she had with her best friend, who will give her quilty hugs for years to come, and try to talk her OUT of spending those cold Iowa winters…in Iowa! :}

“Windowsill Wonders” a 2018 Row of the Month Quilt at BOMquilts.com

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 27, 2018 by TK HarrisonOctober 14, 2018

Windowsill Wonders 2018 Row of the Month Quilt from BOMquilts.com, designed by TK Harrison

I had SO much fun designing and making this quilt! If you are not following along and making it, you can find the free pattern at BOMquilts.com. I used the 1930’s retro “Windowsill Garden” designed by Darlene Zimmerman from Robert Kaufman Fabrics colorway. Pastels are my colors! My daughter colored the fabric panels with crayon and I used my iron to heat-set them.

There are only NINE (9) parts to this pattern and I have revealed SEVEN (7) thus far. My goal is to reveal the final two so that everyone who participates has a quilt finished by the end of the year! Woo Hoo!

As in past years, my quilt is sponsored by Aurifil thread and AbbiMays.com. I couldn’t ask for better folks to be my sponsors!
