Star Power: Flying Stars Quilt Block & Flying Stars Variation Quilt Block

Flying Stars Quilt Block Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at www.QuiltTherapy.com!

Flying Stars Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Light Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, which will also be the FOUR (4) corners as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Rose 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Rose 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Rose: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Rose: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Light Pink 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Rose: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Pink 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Light Pink 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, which will also be the FOUR (4) corners as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Rose 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked on one side by the results of the Light Pink 3 1/4″ squares, and on the other side by the results of the Pink 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Flying Stars Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

  • Light Turquoise: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Dark Teal 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Light Turquoise 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Teal: Cut TWO 3 1/4″ squares. Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Teal 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 3″ squares. (ONE (1) of these will be the center of this quilt block. FOUR (4) of these will be the FOUR (4) corners needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Dark Teal 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked on one side by the results of the Light Turquoise 3 1/4″ squares, and on the other side by the results of the Teal 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

"Harry Loves Alice" 2019 Free Block of the Month Quilt from BOMquilts.com. Block #4 – Whirlpool..Block #5 – Whirlpool

This block was revealed on May 20, 2019 and it’s a really great lesson in making more half-square triangles (HST). This whole quilt is full of HST so if you’re not so good at making them beforehand, you should become quite accomplished, by the time you’re finished with “Harry Loves Alice”. If you’re already an accomplished HST maker then here’s your chance to perfect your HST craft!
