On Cloud Nine: Double X Quilt Block

Double X Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Double X Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Salmon: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWELVE (12) Half=Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Salmon: Cut FOUR (4) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Salmon 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWELVE (12) Half=Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue/Salmon Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank the Lt. Blue 4 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block as needed when it’s sewn together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Red/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Red 2 1/2″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with TWO (2) of the Red

  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Red/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (FOUR (4) of these are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. All of them are paired with the Mint Green/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Mint Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block once they’re sewn together.)
  • Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Green 2″ squares & will help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block once they’re sewn together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Green 2″ squares & will help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired on ONE (1) side with the Green 2 1/2″ squares. They’re paired on ONE (1) other side with the Green/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired on ONE (1) other side with the Mint Green/White Half-Square Triangles. All are needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Teal: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Teal 1 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners. FOUR (4) of these Snowball Corners are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Aqua 5 1/4″ squares & they’re also paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ square. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Teal 5 1/4″ square & they’re also paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ square. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank TWO (2) sides of the Jade 1 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Aqua
    5 1/4″ squares & they’re also paired with the results of the Aqua 5 1/4″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

  • Yellow: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Rust 2 1/2″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Rust: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Yellow 2 1/2″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Rust: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank the results of the Rust
    2 7/8″ squares. They’ll also flank the White 3 3/8″ squares & the White 3 3/8″ x 9″ rectangle. All are needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Rust: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They’ll also be flanked by the results of the Rust 5 1/4″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 3 3/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, which will help sew the center of this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are a paired with the White 2 7/8″ x 9″ rectangle, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, which will help sew the center of this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Rust 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
