Countdown to Christmas 12/6/2019: Cross Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 4 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. (This is paired with the White 4 7/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This is flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Pink 4 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. (This is paired with the White 4 7/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle. (This will flank the results of ONE (1) of the White 4 1/2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut One (1) 4 1/2 ” x 6 1/2″ rectangle. (This will flank the results of ONE (1) of the White 4 1/2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank all of the Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Pink 4 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. On the back side of the square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Pink 4 7/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. On the back side of the square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Red 4 7/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)

Here’s the best way to sew this “Cross” quilt block together:

  1. Sew all of the Half-Square Triangles (HST’s) together first.
  2. Next sew their associated triangles to the HST’s (as listed above in the “Cutting Instructions”).
  3. Now sew the top row together (everything above the Blue line) including the White 4 1/2″ square.
  4. Then sew the middle row together (everything above the Yellow line) including the White 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle.
  5. Then sew the Flying Geese together.
  6. Now sew the bottom row together (everything below the Yellow line) including the White
    4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle.
  7. Finally sew all THREE (3) rows together!

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These will flank on the top & bottom the Red 2 7/8″ x 7 3/4″ strip, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ x 7 3/4″ strip. (This will be flanked on the top & bottom, by the Red 2 7/8″ squares. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Magenta: Cut EIGHT (8) 3 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will make SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the Magenta 3 1/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Magenta 3 1/4″ squares, which will make SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Brown: Cut SIX (6) 1 3/4″ squares. (These will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the Pink 2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut SIX (6) 2″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Brown 1 3/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. You only need THREE (3) of these triangles (These will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the Pink 2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be used at the upper left-hand & lower right-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. You only need SEVEN (7) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Bright Pink 3 1/4″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. You only need SEVEN (7) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This will be the entire right-hand corner of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Light Gray: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Dark Gray 3 3/8″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Dark Gray: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Light Gray
    2 7/8″ squares, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Dark Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These will be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Gray: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (FOUR (4) of these will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block. The other FOUR (4) will be flanked, on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Blue
    2 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Dark Gray 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides, the Dark Gray 1 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Yellow 3 1/2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These will flank the results of the Green 2 3/8″ squares on ONE (1) side & the results of the Yellow 2 3/8″ ” squares on the other side, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Green 2 3/8″ squares on ONE (1) side & the Dark Green 2″ squares on the other side, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Dark Green 4 1/4″ square, which will create a set of FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.
  • Dark Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These will be flanked on one side by the results of the Green 2 3/8″ squares & on the other side by the results of the Dark Green 2 3/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 2″ squares on ONE (1) side & the Dark Green 2″ squares on the other side, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/2″ square, which will create a set of FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Green 2 3/8″ squares, which will create a set of Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
