Quartered Star Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Yellow 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 4 7/8″ squares. (TWO (2) of these are paired with the Blue 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block. The remaining TWO (2) are paired with the Orange 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) more Half-Square Triangles, which will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- Orange: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Yellow 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Quartered Star Quilt Blocks,†you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
Quartered Star Variation Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Yellow 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (TWO (2) of these are paired with the Blue 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block. The remaining TWO (2) are paired with the Orange 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) more Half-Square Triangles & will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.
- Orange: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Yellow 4 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- Orange: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Orange 2 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
