On Cloud Nine: Darting Birds Quilt Block

Darting Birds Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Darting Birds Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides with the Yellow 4 1/2″ square that’s in the center of this quilt block. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other side with the Red 4 1/2″ square that’s in the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. Once sewn together they’ll create ONE (1) Four-Patch.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)

Spokane Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gold: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the Red 3 1/4″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the results of the Red 3 1/4″ square. They’re also paired on TWO (2) sides with the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on ONE (1) side with the results of the Red 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. They’re also paired on the other TWO (2) sides with the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired on TWO (2) sides with the White 2 1/2″ squares in the corners of this quilt block. They’re also paired with the Gold/Red Flying Geese.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the Gold 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the results of the Red 3 1/4″ squares.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Red 3 1/4″ squares. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other side with the Red 3 3/8″ square in the center of this quilt block. In addition they’re paired on another ONE (1) side with the Gold/Red Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the Red 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles.)

  • Gold: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the Sea Green 3 1/4″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese.)
  • Sea Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • Sea Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the results of the Sea Green 3 1/4″ square. They’re also paired on TWO (2) sides with the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares.)
  • Sea Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on ONE (1) side with the results of the Sea Green 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. They’re also paired on the other TWO (2) sides with the White 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)

  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Sea Green 3 1/4″ squares. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other side with the Sea Green 3 3/8″ square in the center of this quilt block. In addition they’re paired on another ONE (1) side with the Gold/Sea Green Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the Sea Green 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles.)

  • Dk. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White
    2 1/2″ square in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) end of the Aqua 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles which will partially create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on  ONE (1) end with the Aqua 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Jade 1 7/8″ x
    3 3/8″ rectangles. They’re also paired on ONE (1) end with the results of the Aqua 3 1/4″ square.)
  • Jade: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) end of the Jade 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles which will partially create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Jade: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on  ONE (1) end with the Jade 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • Jade: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Aqua 1 7/8″ x
    3 3/8″ rectangles. They’re also paired on ONE (1) end with the results of the Jade 3 1/4″ square.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the FOUR (4) Dk. Blue 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Aqua 3 1/4″ square. They’re also flanked on ONE (1) other side by the results of the Jade 3 1/4″ square. Once sewn together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Aqua/Jade/White Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on TWO (2) sides with the Dk. Blue 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles.)

(These triangles are paired on ONE (1) side with the Blue 4 1/4″ squares. Then they’re paired on ONE (1) other side with the Red 4 1/2″ squares. In addition they’re also paired on TWO (2) sides with the Blue/Red Quarter-Square Triangle in the center of this quilt block.)
