On Cloud Nine: Cats & Mice Quilt Block

Cats & Mice Quilt Block Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Cats & Mice Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dark Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These will flank the Light Gray 3 1/2″ squares on ONE (1) side, which will help create FOUR (4) Almost a Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Light Gray 6 1/2″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked on THREE (3) sides by the results of the White 3″ squares & on the other side by the Dark Gray 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. All of these together will create FOUR (4) Almost Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • Light Gray: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Peach 3 1/4″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Peach 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Light Gray 3 1/2″ squares, which will help create FOUR (4) Almost a Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Peach 3 1/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 5″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (This is paired with the Green 5″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 5″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (This is paired with the Yellow 5″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Green 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the results of the Yellow 5″ square & on the other TWO (2) sides the results of the Green 5″ square, as needed for this quilt block.
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the Yellow 3″ squares. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

(Ed. Note: This can be a scrappy quilt block! Just pull out your scraps & use whatever you have to make this quilt block!)

  • Multiple Colors: Cut a total of NINETEEN (19) 2″ squares. (These are all paired with each other as needed for this quilt block.)
  • TWO (2) Different Colors: Cut ONE (1) 3″ square of each color. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • THREE (3) Different Colors: Cut ONE (1) 3″ square of each color. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the “TWO (2) Different Colors,” which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will be the lower left-hand & the lower right-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)

  • Navy Blue: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Blue 4″ squares & the White 4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
