On Cloud Nine: Sawtooth Pinwheel Quilt Block

Sawtooth Pinwheel Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Sawtooth Pinwheel Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)

Fair and Square Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Orange 1 1/2″ x
    4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Yellow 1 1/2″ x
    4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Yellow 1 1/2″ x
    4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Yellow 3 1/2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Orange 2 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (TWO (2) of these are paired with the White 2 7/8″ x 5 1/4″ rectangles. The remaining TWO (2) of these are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut THREE (3) 2 3/4″ squares. (TWO (2) of these are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares. The remaining ONE (1) is paired with the results of the Brown 2 7/8″ squares.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ squares. (This is paired with the White 3 1/4″ square, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 2 7/8″ squares. (THREE (3) of these are paired with the Red 2 7/8″ squares. The remaining TWO (2) of these are the lower left & right corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. On the back side, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Brown 3 1/4″ square, which will make TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ x 5 1/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Red 2 7/8″ squares as 8needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 7/8″ x 7 3/4″ rectangle. (This is paired with the TWO (2) Brown 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green embroidery floss or thread for the stem of the flower.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Ash Green: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These are flanked by the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Ash Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White
    2 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Mint Green 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Green 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Ash Green 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
