Star Power: Judy’s Star Quilt Block & Judy’s Star Variation Quilt Block

Judy's Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Judy’s Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lavender: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the Purple 4 3/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the results of the Lavender 7 1/4″ square.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the Purple 7 1/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Judy’s Star Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Judy’s Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dk. Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with on ONE (1) side the results of the White 4 1/2″ square & they’re paired on ONE (1) other side by the results of the White
    3 7/8″ squares. All are needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Dk. Green 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Green 7 1/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Green 3 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Quarter-Square Triangle in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired with ONE (1) of the Half-Square Triangles & they’ll help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the ONE (1) side of the results of the Purple 5 1/4″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 2 1/2″ squares. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the Purple 5 1/4″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (TWO (2) of these will be flanked by the results of the Yellow 2 7/8″ squares. TWO (2) more will be flanked by the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ squares. All of these are needed for this quilt block.
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Yellow 2 7/8″ squares & on ONE (1) other side by the Pink 2 7/8″ squares. All of these are needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of the center square.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the Purple 4 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
