Evening Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Evening Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWENTY (20) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Nine-Patch blocks. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 1 1/2″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Nine-Patch blocks. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 2 7/8″ squares. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Blue
    2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Blue 2 3/8″ squares.)

  • Red: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 3/4″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the Red 2″ squares & the Blue 2″ squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the White 6″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Red 1 3/4″ squares & the Blue 2″ squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the White 6″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles.   • Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, as well as the results of the Purple 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.   • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ square. They’ll then be flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares & the Blue 3 7/8″ squares. All of them together will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese for this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares, as well as the Lt. Blue 2 3/8″ squares & the White 2 3/8″ squares. All of them together will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Lt. Blue 2 3/8″ squares.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Lt. Blue 2 3/8″ squares & they’ll also flank the results of the Blue 3 7/8″ squares. In addition to the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares, they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Navy Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″
    square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Navy Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sky Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sky Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White
    3 3/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Sky Blue 2 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back sides, draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Sky Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Navy Blue 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
