Framed Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as is needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Pink 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Purple 4 1/2″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as is needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Purple 2″ squares & they’ll flank the results of the Purple 3 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Navy Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Navy Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Navy Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will be paired with the Sky Blue 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sky Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Sky Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will be paired with the Sky Blue 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sky Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Sky Blue 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gray: Cut FOUR (2) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles to make this block. (These are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. It’s also the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares. (FOUR (4) of these will flank the results of the Red 2 3/8″ squares & the results of the Gray 2 3/8″ squares. The remaining FOUR (4) will flank the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 3/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut TWENTY (20) 2″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWENTY (20) 1 1/2″ squares. (These will flank the results of the Red 2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 2″ squares. (These are the center’s of each of the “stars” in this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the top  & bottom row square’s. As well as the left-hand & right-hand square’s for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the Red 2″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Cluster of Stars Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

(These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ square & the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWENTY (20) 2″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWENTY (20) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Yellow 2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the center’s of the “stars” for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the Yellow 2″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.
