It’s All in the Quilt Tag

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 3, 2018 by TK HarrisonApril 28, 2018

I made a machine embroidered and pieced quilted wall hanging that I sold to a dear friend, Joan, from Utah (we lived there from 1999 – 2006). The proceeds of that quilt will go towards our youngest daughter and her BFF who plan to go on a mission trip to Denver in June with our church group.

Embroidered & Pieced Quilt Designed & Made by TK Harrison, Quilted by Meloney Funk

In the four corners of the quilt are machine embroidered Luther Roses:

Another dear friend, Meloney, quilted the wall hanging for me. It’s not so easy to see in the photo above, but for each of the embroidered areas, she stitched lines from the roses or crosses outward toward each of the fabric borders. It makes them appear to be suspended in midair, or to have rays of sunshine beaming off of them. Absolutely beautiful quilting!

But the fun part of the quilt is on the back. Joan is originally from that one city over yonder to the east, one of the ones with four  professional sports teams – baseball, football, basketball & hockey. It starts with the letter “P”. The football team she’s been rooting for her ENTIRE LIFE *finally* won the super bowl earlier this year. Their first super bowl win EVER!!!

Now, Joan enjoys a good laugh. She always had a joke ready for my husband when we’d go to church or he’d have one ready for her. She and my husband really got along great and that always put a smile on both of their faces. Which made me love her all the more!

When it came to writing out and embroidering her quilt tag, I knew I needed to make it fun and honor her favorite football team. Here’s what I came up with – can you figure out what I did?

Quilting with Nature

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 21, 2014 by TK HarrisonMay 19, 2014

The prickly pear cactus flowers are blooming and they have such amazing colors!

I took these photos to one of my image programs and wanted to see the quilt-worthy colors in the flowers.  Here is what I came up with:

Cactus

Not only is there natural beauty in nature, but it can clearly become hand-made beauty in quilting!  So, the next time you are out and about and see colors in nature, take a snapshot of them and then see if you can create a quilt that truly exemplifies all of natures colors – surrounding yourself with quilted color love from outside and inside!

btw – Speaking from experience, I do not recommend photographing a prickly pear cactus unless you are very sure-footed.

Food for Quilting Colors

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 20, 2013 by TK HarrisonNovember 17, 2013

I have said it before and I will say it again – MANY of the food items that we eat are quilt color inspirations.  This is a photo of a delicious pasta salad I made.  Take a look at the colors (below the image) that would make a fabulous quilt!

Documenting a Quilt with Photography

Quilt Therapy Posted on August 27, 2013 by TK HarrisonAugust 27, 2013

I am pretty retentive when it comes to photographing my quilts – whether I am making one from someone else’s pattern or one of my own designs.  I try to take a picture of each block that goes into a traditional block quilt (or the finished project if it’s not traditional blocks).  As I was searching for a quilt I made a number of years ago, I realized I had some of block photographs and thought I’d have my own little show n’tell with quilts that I made in 2004.  Hope you enjoy the journey with me – and if you click on the blocks, you will see the quilt that the block goes with at BOMQuilts.com:

These definitely weren’t all that I made in 2004, but it’s a start!  I think I’ll take some time to put some pages together for myself with photos of the quilt blocks and the finished quilts.  How do YOU document all of the quilts that you take?

Help Wanted: Paul Bunyan

Quilt Therapy Posted on August 20, 2013 by TK HarrisonAugust 19, 2013

As I’ve mentioned before, I designed two quilts for my foster mother’s twin grandkids – who are seniors this year and will graduate from high school next year.  I already made a quilt for her granddaughter and now it was time to make her grandson’s quilt.

I have shared bits and pieces of this robot quilt already, which you can find here and here.

This past weekend, I was able to finish the gigantic quilt – it ended up being about 6′ x 8′!

When trying to take a photograph of a large quilt, it helps to have children who are at least 8’ tall…or 6’ tall.  Since I do not have children that are that size – you get the best quilt photo I could take with the children I have to help me (standing on a chair and the coffee table).

The photo of this quilt shown above is not worth keeping.  I couldn’t get the kids to hold the quilt so that I didn’t catch all of the furniture and their heads in the photo.  I edited one of the photos that I took and ended up with the same results.

My husband actually came up with a brilliant idea and that was to hold the quilt off the highest part of our deck and take a photo that way.  It was pretty easy to snap some photos of the quilt, though it did take my husband and all four kids to hold the quilt for me.

The moral of the story?  Listen to the hubster (shhhh, don’t tell him that, though 🙂 )
