On Cloud Nine: Alice’s Quilt Block

Alice’s Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gold: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the White 1 1/2″ squares. It’s also paired with the Green 1 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Gold: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the Gold/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other end with the Green squares that are in the Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block. Additionally they’re paired  on ONE (1) other side with the Green 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ squares. They’re also paired with the Gold 1 1/2″ square. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the White 1 1/2″ square. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other end with the White 1 1/2″ squares that are in the Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block. Additionally they’re paired  on ONE (1) other side with the Gold 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the White
    1 1/2″ square. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other end with the White 1 1/2″ squares that are in the in the Nine-Patch center of this quilt block. Additionally they’re paired  on TWO (2) other sides with the Gold 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles. (These are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block. They “frame” the Green/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles. (These are the left-hand & the right-hand “frame” around the Green/White Half-Square Triangles. As needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Gold 1 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 1 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 1 1/2″ squares. They’re also paired with the Gold 1 1/2″ square. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 4 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt. Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 4 1/2″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Dk. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, then they’re paired with the White 3 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares. They’ll also create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares.  (These are paired with the Dk. Blue 2 7/8″ squares, then they’re paired with the White 3 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares. They’ll also create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides by the Dk. Blue
    2 7/8″ squares. Then they’re paired on the other TWO (2) sides by the White 2 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block when sewn together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)

Lightening Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Gray 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Green 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Dk. Blue: Cut TEN (10) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles, are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will flank the Gray 3 3/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles, are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired on ONE (1) side with the Green/Gray Flying Geese, they’re also paired on ONE (1) other side with the Dk. Blue/White Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares, they’re also paired with the White 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re flanked by the results of the Teal 2 3/8″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ square. (This is the very center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Navy Blue 2″ squares & it’s also paired with the White 2″ squares. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Teal: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares. (These squares are flanked by the results of the Teal 2 3/8″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Teal: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (EIGHT (8) of these triangles will flank the Lt. Blue 2″ squares in the corner of this quilt block. They’ll also flank the Teal 2″ squares, as will the remaining 2 3/8″ squares, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block. They’ll also flank the Teal 2″ squares as needed when it’s sewn together.)
  • Navy Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ squares. They’re also paired with the Lt. Blue 1 7/8″ square. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Navy Blue 1 7/8″ squares. They’re also paired with the Lt. Blue 1 7/8″ square. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Nine-Patch in the center of this quilt block together.)
