Quilt Dash is “Sailing Away” this Month!
Ah, summers! Picnics, family, cookouts. Getting together at the water’s edge to camp out & run your sailboats. The paper kind or the real ones! 🙂 That’s what summers are all about!
For the July Quilt Dash, the free pattern that’s available to members who complete the Quilt Dash, this is what the pattern looks like:
Sailing Away Quilt
A pieced quilt pattern
Size 54 3/4†W x 78 1/4†H
Sailing Away makes a cute quilt for a boy or for an adult sailor. Constructed with pieced sailboat blocks, this pattern is easy to adjust to make it larger or smaller. You can also use your scraps to make it scrappy looking.
Isn’t it just too cute!?! The size of the quilt blocks are
10″ square finished &
10 1/2″ square unfinished.

Star Power: Flying Stars Quilt Block & Flying Stars Variation Quilt Block
Flying Stars Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Light Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, which will also be the FOUR (4) corners as needed for this quilt block.)
- Light Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Rose 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Light Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut TWO 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Rose 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
- Rose: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- Rose: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Light Pink 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Rose: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Pink 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 3″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Light Pink 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, which will also be the FOUR (4) corners as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Rose 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 6″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked on one side by the results of the Light Pink 3 1/4″ squares, and on the other side by the results of the Pink 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Flying Stars Quilt Blocks,†you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

- Light Turquoise: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Dark Teal 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- Light Turquoise: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
- Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Dark Teal 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the results of the White 6″ square to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
- Dark Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- Dark Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Light Turquoise 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- Dark Teal: Cut TWO 3 1/4″ squares. Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Teal 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FIVE (5) 3″ squares. (ONE (1) of these will be the center of this quilt block. FOUR (4) of these will be the FOUR (4) corners needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the Dark Teal 3 1/4″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 6″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked on one side by the results of the Light Turquoise 3 1/4″ squares, and on the other side by the results of the Teal 3 1/4″ squares, to create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
