Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Rust: Cut TWO 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Rust: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut TWO 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Rust 4 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Rust 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Rust/White Half-Square Triangles on ONE (1) side & on ONE (1) other side they’re paired with the Rust/Blue Quarter-Square Triangles.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Pure Symbol Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
Hi TK, can you please why this design uses four QST’s (Rust and Blue) rather than HST’s of the same colour combination?
You could make it with HSTs if you choose to. I designed it with QSTs because they are easier to make.
