Quilted Kitchen: Rolling Squares Quilt Block & Lemon Squares Recipe

Rolling Squares Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Rolling Squares Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. Then they’re paired with the Yellow 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank ONE (1) side of the Yellow 3 3/8″ squares in the corners of this quilt block. Once they’re sewn together with the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares they’ll create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These are flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ squares. They’re also flanked on THREE (3) other sides by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares. Once they’re sewn together with the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares they’ll create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Pink/White Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank THREE (3) sides of the Yellow 3 3/8″ squares in the corners of this quilt block. Once they’re sewn together with the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ squares they’ll create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. Then they’re paired with the Yellow 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)

Darting Birds Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides with the Yellow 4 1/2″ square that’s in the center of this quilt block. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other side with the Red 4 1/2″ square that’s in the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. Once sewn together they’ll create ONE (1) Four-Patch.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)

Feathered Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dk. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White
    2 1/2″ square in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) end of the Aqua 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles which will partially create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on  ONE (1) end with the Aqua 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Jade 1 7/8″ x
    3 3/8″ rectangles. They’re also paired on ONE (1) end with the results of the Aqua 3 1/4″ square.)
  • Jade: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) end of the Jade 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles which will partially create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Jade: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on  ONE (1) end with the Jade 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • Jade: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Aqua 1 7/8″ x
    3 3/8″ rectangles. They’re also paired on ONE (1) end with the results of the Jade 3 1/4″ square.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the FOUR (4) Dk. Blue 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Aqua 3 1/4″ square. They’re also flanked on ONE (1) other side by the results of the Jade 3 1/4″ square. Once sewn together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Aqua/Jade/White Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired on TWO (2) sides with the Dk. Blue 2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangles.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the Red 4 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. Once sewn together it’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block.
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Blue 2 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Gold: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the Red 1 7/8″ square in the center of this quilt block. Which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These squares are sewn together with the results of the Blue 2 1/2″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners, in the center portion of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the Blue
    1 1/2″ x 2 3/8″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times per square. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the Blue 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt clock.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Gold 1 7/8″ x 4 2/4″ rectangles.)
