On Cloud Nine: Mystery Quilt Block

Mystery Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Mystery Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Rust: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew it together.)
  • Rust: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Salmon: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Salmon/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew it together.)
  • Salmon: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Salmon 2 1/2″ squares & will help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. All are needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Salmon 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Salmon 2 1/2″ squares & will help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. All are needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the Rust
    4 1/2″ square, in the center of this quilt block, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Salmon/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Summer Winds Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dk. Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Yellow-Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Ash Green/White Half-Square Triangles on TWO sides. They’re also paired with the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares on the other TWO (2) sides. Then they’re all paired with the Mint Green/White Half-Square Triangles & they’ll create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. All are needed to sew it together.)
  • Ash Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. These are paired with the Yellow-Green
    2 1/2″ squares on TWO (2) sides. They’re also paired with the Mint Green/White Half-Square Triangles on the other TWO (2) sides & they’ll create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as are needed to sew it together.)
  • Mint Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. These are paired with the Ash Green/White Half-Square Triangles on TWO (2) sides. Then they’re paired with the Yellow-Green 2 1/2″ squares & they’ll create FOUR (4) Four-Patches. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as are needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the Dk. Green 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut TWENTY 2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ squares. They’ll create FOUR (4) Nine-Patches. When sewn together they’ll create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Rust: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.
  • Teal: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the results of the Rust 4 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Snowball corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gold: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed to sew it together.)
  • Gold: Cut NINE (9) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHTEEN (18) Half-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these Half-Square Triangles are the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
