Checkerboard Quilt Block




This quilt block is meant to be scrappy. So pull out your scraps & have fun with them while making this quilt block! Or follow my fabric color suggestions (below) & create a quilt block like the one shown above!

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Orange: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Turquoise: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Bright Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on all FOUR (4) sides, by the White 3 3/8″ squares. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked on TWO (2) sides, by the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These will flank on all FOUR (4) sides, the Bright Pink
    3 3/8″ square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank all of the color’s shown above, with the exception of the Bright Pink 3 3/8″ square, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Light Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White
    4 3/4″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Light Blue 3 7/8″ squares, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Purple 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Brown: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the White
    4 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Brown 4 1/2″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White  4 1/2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Brown  4 1/2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 6 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Brown
    4 7/8″ squares & the Brown 4 1/2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (ONE (1) of these will be sewn in Row #2 & the other ONE (1) will be sewn in the left-hand corner portion, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips. (ONE (1) of these will be sewn into Row #1 & the other ONE (1) will be sewn in the left-hand corner portion, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be sewn in the left-hand corner portion as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strip. (This will be sewn into Row #2 & will be flanked one ONE (1) side by the Tan 3 1/2″ square & on the other side by the Brown 3 1/2″ square. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be sewn into Row #2 & will flank a Tan 3 1/2″ x
    6 1/2″ strip, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strip. (This will be sewn into Row #1 as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be paired with the left-hand corner portion of this quilt block, it will also be the right-hand portion of this quilt block.)
