On Cloud Nine: New Hourglass Quilt Block

New Hourglass Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Salmon: Cut EIGHTEEN (18) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Salmon 2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the Salmon 2″ squares. They will also be the top & bottom of this quilt block.
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 13 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These will be the left & the right sides of this quilt block.)

Mother’s Favorite Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Pink 6 1/4″ square which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Pink 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the results of the Pink 3 7/8″ squares & on the other TWO (2) sides the results of the Pink 2 3/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/4″ x 7 5/8″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the Pink 6 1/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/4″ x 9″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the Pink 6 1/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Red 2 3/8″ squares on TWO (2) sides & the results of the Red 3 7/8″ squares on the other TWO (2) sides, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Red 3 7/8″ squares on TWO (2) sides as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Red 5 1/4″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWELVE (12) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with each other throughout this entire quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Red 3 3/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the Pink 2 1/2″ squares & the results of the Pink 2 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)

Starting on January 20, 2020 the Fabric Requirements will be posted at BOMquilts.com.
Then on the 20th of each month, from February through November, another portion of the “Midnight Stargazer” pattern will be revealed.

Which means that you should have your “Midnight Stargazer” quilt top finished in time to give it to someone for Christmas next year!

I can tell you right now, that Abbi May’s Quilt Shop sells out of the kits from my BOM quilts, in no time flat! So if you’re interested in making my “Midnight Stargazer” I suggest that you purchase your quilt kit sooner than later!
