Mother’s Favorite Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Red: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Pink 6 1/4″ square which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
- Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Pink 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the results of the Pink 3 7/8″ squares & on the other TWO (2) sides the results of the Pink 2 3/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Red: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/4″ x 7 5/8″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the Pink 6 1/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
- Red: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/4″ x 9″ rectangles. (These will flank the results of the Pink 6 1/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Red 2 3/8″ squares on TWO (2) sides & the results of the Red 3 7/8″ squares on the other TWO (2) sides, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Red 3 7/8″ squares on TWO (2) sides as needed for this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Red 5 1/4″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Grandmother’s Favorite Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
