Block size = 12â€³ finished & 12 1/2â€³ unfinished

Block #2 – Part #1 of the Midnight Stargazer 2020 BOM Quilt

This block is by far the most challenging quilt block to sew together thus far! In fact, I think it *is* the most difficult one of all six of them! Which is why the pattern’s being revealed in two separate parts. This month’s pattern includes the cutting instructions & the first part of sewing the “Stockyard Star” quilt block together.
Next month’s pattern will complete the “Stockyard Star” quilt block construction.

But once it’s sewn together, you’ll see what I’m talking about, when I said all of those adjectives above ðŸ™‚ ! The black background fabric brings out the beauty of the ombrÃ© fabrics that go into making each & every quilt block.

Star Power: Combination Star Quilt Block & Combination Star Variation Quilt Block

Combination Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12â€³ finished block (precise 1/4â€³ seam allowance):

Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
Blue: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4â€³ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White
5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Blue 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4â€³ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Blue
5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) â€œCombination Star Quilt Blocks,â€ you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Combination Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12â€³ finished block (precise 1/4â€³ seam allowance):

Purple: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4â€³ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
Purple: Cut FIVE (5) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Square in a Square’s. FOUR (4) of them will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block. The final ONE (1) will be the center of this quilt block.)
White: Cut TEN (10) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Purple 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Square in a Square’s. FOUR (4) of them will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block. The final ONE (1) will be the center of this quilt block.)
White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4â€³ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12â€³ finished block (precise 1/4â€³ seam allowance):

Medium Blue: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ square.
Rust: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ squares.
Pink: Cut THREE (3) 1 1/2″ squares.
Mint Green, Turquoise: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares of EACH color.
Purple, Yellow: Cut FIVE (5) 1 1/2″ squares of EACH color.
Purple, Yellow, Medium Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares of EACH color.
Rust: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares.
Blue: Cut SIX (6) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles.
Purple, Pink, Medium Blue: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles of EACH color.

Cutting Requirements for 12â€³ finished block (scant 1/4â€³ seam allowance):

Orange: Cut FIVE (5) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares & will create the horizontal & vertical center of this quilt block.)
Light Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
Dark Green: Cut TWO (2) 6″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the Orange 3″ squares & will create the horizontal & vertical center of this quilt block.)
White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Light Green 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Dark Green 6″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
