Star Power: Wild Geese Star Quilt Block & Wild Geese Star Variation Quilt Block

Wild Geese Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Wild Geese Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. (This is paired with the White 3 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. Together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are are flanked by the results of the Gray
    4 1/4″ square, as well as the results of the White 4 1/4″ square. Together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the center Quarter-Square triangle, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. ( These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the Green 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (This is paired with the Green 3 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. Together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Gray 5 1/4″ squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the Green 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Wild Geese Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles, (This is paired with the results of the White 3 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. They’ll also be create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the Gray 4 1/4″
    squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Quarter-Square Triangle in the center of this quilt block, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 4 1/4″  squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Blue 3 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Blue 3 7/8″ squares & the results of the Gray 3 7/8″ squares. Together they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Brown 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1)  Four-Patch. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block. They’ll be flanked by the results of the White 5 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Tan: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Tan 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. Together they’ll create TWO (2) of the corners of this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Tan 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. Together they’ll create TWO (2) of the corners of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Tan 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1)  Four-Patch. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block. They’ll be flanked by the results of the White 5 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Brown 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. Together they’ll create TWO (2) of the corners of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Brown 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. Together they’ll create TWO (2) of the corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Tan & Brown Four-Patch in the center of this quilt block. Which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Nine-Patch, see #2 on the Quilt Block Diagram below. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 7/8″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ rectangles, see Step #3 on the Quilt Block Diagram, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 1 7/8″ squares & the results of the White 3 1/2″ squares. See #1 on the Quilt Block Diagram below. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FIVE (5) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 1 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Nine-Patch, see #2 on the Quilt Block Diagram below. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Blue 1 7/8″ squares. See #1 on the Quilt Block Diagram below. FOUR (4) of them will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (3) 3 1/2″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the Blue 1 7/8″ squares. See #1 on the Quilt Block Diagram below. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 1 7/8″ rectangles, see Step #3 on the Quilt Block Diagram below, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • Blue: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 1 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank each & every one of the Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWELVE (12) 1 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY-FOUR (24) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Blue 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Blue 1 7/8″ squares, as well as the White 2 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 1 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 1 7/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY-FOUR (24) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (FOUR (4) of these will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. The remaining FOUR (4) of them will create the center of this quilt block. Each one of them will create EIGHT (8) Snowball corners.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Blue 1 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
