Star Power: Simple Star Quilt Block & Simple Star Variation Quilt Block

Simple Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Simple Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 4 3/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the White
    3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Red 3 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Red 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt. Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut THREE (3) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the upper left-hand & lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. You only need THREE (3) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These will be flanked by the results of the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares. ONE (1) of them will be the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) will be the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block.)

  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the White

  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.   • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Blue 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

You only need THREE (3) of these triangles to make this quilt block. (These are flanked by the results of the Gold 1 7/8″ squares. Then they’re paired with the results of the White 6 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: FOURTEEN (14) 1 7/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
